Baltimore's First Food Truck Rally a Huge Success

"The Gathering" talk of becoming a monthly event!

Baltimore Food Trucks To 'Gather'

BALTIMORE -- Nearly a dozen gourmet food trucks converged on Baltimore Friday for an event that served a variety of specialties -- all for a good cause. Despite the rainy start more than 1000 people turned up for the event that may go monthly!

The Silver Platter is the latest addition to a growing venue of gourmet food trucks in Baltimore City. For the past three weeks, Chef Chris Cherry has made more than a dozen dishes, all fresh and presented with style.
"What we have are things like sweet chili baby-back ribs, we have lobster mac and cheese with truffle essence, we have some creamed white corn and prosciutto bacon, we do things like firecracker shrimp and New England lobster roll, which is one of our biggest sellers," said Chef Chris Cherry, of Silver Platter. "We wanted to give the customer something different than just food in a brown bag, so we went to high-end plastics and different types of presentation."

On Friday, the Silver Platter and other Baltimore food trucks, like Chowhound Gourmet Burgers from Kooper's Tavern,  gathered at a parking lot at Central at Eastern avenues in Harbor East for a first-time event called "The Gathering.""We're all very excited to do it because we want the segment to grow," Cherry said.
"Chowhound is our restaurant on the streets. We're able to take restaurant-quality food out into the streets where people may not have been to Fells Point. We take it out into the counties, we go all the way down to Annapolis Junction," said Bill Irwin, director of operations for Chowhound Gourmet Burgers. "You're getting restaurant-quality food on the road."
WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Jennifer Franciotti said it  provided foodies a chance to sample a variety of restaurant-quality food in one location.

"We'll have all kinds of food. This is a giant food court is what we're bringing to you along with the music," Irwin said. "We're having a rally. We're going to get together with rock and roll music, ice-cold beer, delicious wine, the mayor will be there. It brings us all together."

Baltimore, Baltimore Weekend Event, Something New July 8, 2011

Rally of Baltimore Food Trucks "The Gathering" July 8th from 5PM - 10PM

Something new in Baltimore

The Gathering, Baltimore's first food truck rally, is set for next Friday night in Harbor East. Baltimore's fleet of shiny, happy food trucks will gather on July 8, from 5 to 10 p.m. on the lot at 421 Central Avenue.

The newly formed food-truck consortium was considering a rally for the Fall, but Damian Bohager, whose new Silver Platter truck has taken up semi-permanent residence at the Central Avenue site,  pulled the Gathering quickly. Confirmed for the rally are Kooper's Chowound Burger WagonMiss Shirley'sIced GemsSouper FreakGrrChe and Gypsy Queen. You can find more information on the Silver Platter Facebook page.

The Gathering will give people who don't come into daily or weekly contact with the food trucks a chance to sample them all in one place. For food-truck regulars, it's a fever dream. Beer and wine will be for sale at the event, which is a benefit for the There Goes My Hero Foundation.

Rallies like this one can be either an alternative or a supplement to on-street food truck operations. They're the big thing right now in Portland, where weekend truck rallies have become destinations. If this event goes well, Bohager says, the Gathering could turn into monthly event.
